NCAA Track and Field Championships Picks
Lucked out on the men yesterday, going 5/6 in picks. Only, there were some very solid favorites to choose from. The women’s side of things feels much less assuring. Today’s opinions:
Women’s 4x100m — Florida vs. Any Other Team
A very interesting race, as the two fastest teams in the history of the NCAA women’s 4×100 won’t even be competing. Oregon and LSU both are disqualified for passing the baton out of the zone in their qualifiers. That leaves Florida as a favorite for the finals after being the only the only team to run sub-43 in the qualifier. This UF 4×100 team is full of upperclassman, featuring 3 redshirt seniors and a junior. Nothing I’ve seen would make me believe they should be solid favorites but I’d favor the veteran Gators here.
Women’s 100m — Aleia Hobbs or Deajah Stevens vs. Any Other Competitor
Hobbs and Stevens are the favorites in this race. No other competitors in this race have posted faster numbers than these two in their college careers. The ones to keep an eye on are Ashley Henderson (SDSU) and Ariana Washington (Oregon). They both have posted sub-11 second times – the only two in this race to do so besides Hobbs and Stevens. If the race ends up in the lower 11’s for time then it’s likely any one of the runners can take this race. If Aleia Hobbs or Deajah Stevens can post very near to or under 11 seconds, one of them should take this race.
Pick: Aleia Hobbs or Deajah Stevens
Women’s 400m Hurdles — Sage Watson (ARIZ) vs. Any Other Competitor
Watson won her heat by about a second (which is a decently big margin in track). Her biggest competition will be freshman Anna Cockrell (USC). Watson took care of Cockrell at the PAC 12 championships by .5 seconds. Watson is coming off of reaching the semifinals in this event in the 2016 Summer Olympics (running for Canada). It’s a freshman vs. a senior here and I’ll take the experienced latter. Sage Watson is a favorite to win the 400mH and feels like the most trustworthy of the Women’s T&F picks today.
Pick: Sage Watson (ARIZ) ✓
Women’s 4x400m — USC vs. Any Other Team
May as well read USC vs. Oregon for the prop. Both squads won their heats with ease Thursday. The Trojans have bested the Ducks in two championships this season. They were .04 seconds better at the NCAA indoor championship but 2+ seconds better at the PAC 12 championship. They’re not the goliaths that the Texas A&M men’s 4×400 team were yesterday but they’re still the favorites here and have proven they can take care of business. Give USC the edge but don’t be surprised to see Oregon right there with them at the end.
